Publications
Explore Key Publications and Presentations Highlighting Sentronic Product Use Cases. There are many questions around the implementation of NIR based PAT in general and many questions related to the use of our systems. We try to provide answers and the most frequently raised questions.
This depends a lot on what the goal of using the process analytical technology (PAT) is, what unit operations are used in the manufacturing process, and whether the process is in a liquid or solid state.
For instance, when tableting oral solid dosage (OSD) drug product, near infrared (NIR) PAT can be installed in the feed frame of a tablet press to assess the blend uniformity of the material being tableted. NIR PAT is often chosen for this application for its broad selectivity to common pharmaceuticals and many active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), ability to analyze a unit dose (UD) of material in a very short period of time, and its non-destructive nature. In the case of tablet press, minimal modification of the manufacturing equipment is required. In this case, only a modification of the feed frame to install a probe or process window for a PAT probe analyzes material through.
When considering using PAT in pharmaceutical manufacturing, the following should be considered:
Sampling of material: How will material be presented to the PAT? Can this be installed in-line? Will it need to be an at-line or off-line analysis instead? Can the PAT be used to analyze moving material?
Speed of analysis: How fast do you need information? Is this for process understanding or process control? If the information from PAT is being used for control, can the data be analyzed and a process decision be made at the speed required?
Technical Requirements: What is the process of information that the PAT is assessing? Does this application have technical specifications, like accuracy or precision? If so, is the PAT fit for that purpose?
Cost: Does the PAT's cost have a business case which is sensible for this installation?
There are many other considerations for installing PAT, but these areas should almost always be assessed when considering PAT installations.
Yes, when combined with a process probe with the SentroProbe DR LS, a SentroPAT FO can be used as an NIR PAT analyzer to assess blend in a tablet press
Yes, this is a very common application. NIR PAT is a common PAT modality for OSD continuous manufacturing (CM) and can be used to analyze a variety of continuous unit operations. The SentroPAT FO's diode array detector allows the system to very quickly analyze moving powder without risk of spectral artefacts, which can occur with other spectrometer types. The system is ruggedized for industrial environments and is compatible with common software suites used to manage PAT data in a pharmaceutical CM environment (e.g., SynTQ, SIPAT, Proxaxxis).
